Discovering the Story Behind the Cody Mural Museum

July 1st, 2026 | By Macee Dahl

Farrah Ashcraft and I, both Kinetic Greenhouse interns, had the opportunity to travel from Billings, Montana, to visit our client, the , on May 22, 2026. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

From the moment we arrived, the missionaries welcomed us with warmth and kindness. Throughout the museum, every space told a story through history, artwork, and thoughtful detail.

What stood out most was how much meaning the mural carries. Each missionary we spoke with shared a heartfelt “why” behind their decision to serve at the museum, which made the experience feel even more personal and impactful.

The Art and Storytelling Behind the Cody Mural Museum

Every piece in the museum carries purpose, especially the mural itself. Made from pure Irish linen and painted with oil-based paints mixed with beeswax, the mural features incredible color, texture, and detail.

Edward T. Grigware, the artist behind the mural, spent nearly a year studying the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to accurately capture the emotion and history behind each scene.

What makes the mural especially fascinating is the level of intention behind every detail. From facial expressions to hidden symbolism, each section invites viewers to connect more deeply with the story being told. Standing beneath it feels immersive, almost like stepping into different moments in history.

The more time you spend with the mural, the more details you notice, each one reflecting the patience, artistry, and research that went into its creation.

The Mission Behind the Museum

The Cody Mural Museum is about more than preserving history, it’s about creating connection through storytelling, faith, and education.

One of the most meaningful parts of the visit was meeting the missionaries who dedicate their time to sharing the history of the mural and the settlement of the Big Horn Basin.

During our visit, Farrah and I interviewed Elder and Sister Billin, who had only been serving at the museum for two weeks but already spoke with deep passion about the stories they share. Both said their favorite part of the museum was the mural itself—not only for its beauty, but for the meaning behind every scene.

What made the experience especially powerful was the people. Whether visitors arrive knowing the history or learning it for the first time, the missionaries create a welcoming environment where everyone feels included. Their passion for preserving the history of the Big Horn Basin truly brings the museum to life.

Sharing the Story Through Kinetic Greenhouse

One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was seeing how marketing can help preserve and share history with a wider audience.

Through Kinetic Greenhouse, we’ve had the opportunity to support the Cody Mural Museum through social media marketing, content creation, and storytelling.

Experiencing the museum in person gave us a deeper appreciation for the stories we help share online. Standing beneath the mural, hearing the missionaries speak, and learning the meaning behind each detail reminded us that marketing is about more than promotion, it’s about helping people connect with stories, history, and experiences they may not otherwise encounter.
